Hurling Notes - 19th Sept
Westport U16 Hurlers has great win over Ballyhaunis in the third round of the championship last Friday eve in Westport.
It was a very close and exciting game and the sides were level going into injury time at 1-6 to 1-6. A late long distance free by Darragh Gallagher closed the door on the game and Westport took their third victory in a row. The scoreline did not reflect the possession that Westport had but failed to convert many chances and so left the game hanging by a thread to the end. Best on show for Westport was Darragh Gallagher who accounted for all 1-7 of Westport's scores.
Senior Championship Semi Final VS Tooreen:
Westport travelled to McHale Park Saturday afternoon to take on Tooreen for a place in the Senior Final. The conditions were difficult but both teams coped well with swirling wind and rain. From early in the game it was clear that Westport had an edge over their rivals and Tooreen only had four scores from frees in the first half. Westport were relatively comfortable going in at half time with a three point lead.
The second half resumed in the same vein as Westport slowly but surely pulled away from Tooreen and half way through has a six point lead. It was difficult to see Tooreen coming back at this stage. But with some minutes to Tooreen followed up a couple of points with a fortunate goal and another point to draw level with Westport and an upset was on the cards. Westport however, responded well to this and did not give away any free from there on in to give Tooreen a chance to lead. A late, but brilliant point from Declan Gallagher put Westport ahead by only one point but it was enough in a tight game to seal victory. Best performers for Westport were, Full back players Aiden Connolly and John Connolly. Stephen Broderick very solid on free taking.
