THE WEST AWAKE

Westport 1-10 Castlebar 0-11

Westport defeated old rivals Castlebar in the the U-12 A  West Final on Monday last with a trilling 2 point win in sunny Islandeady.  Castlebar started the brighter of the two teams going 4 points to 1 up after 13 minutes with the Castlebar points coming from Ethan Gibbons 0-02f, and 1 each from Jack Heavey and Ryan Dunne with Westport's reply coming from wing forward Colm Moran. Westport managed to claw their way back into things with 3 points from Killian Kilkelly 2 from play and a  45, and a great point from distance from centre back Paul Duffy.  Castlebars reply coming from Ethan Gibbos to leave the half time score Castlebar 0-06 Westport 0-05.  In the second half Westport levelled early on with a point from Eoin Conway.  Castlebar then pushed 2 points ahead with points from Ethan Gibbons Free on 28 minutes and Jack Heavey on 31 minutes.  Westport replied well with points from Kilkelly and lambert to level at 0-08 to 0-08 on 38 min then Castlebars Jack Heavey and Westport's Paul Lambert trading points to level again to set up a grand stand finish. Then with 6 minutes to go the crucial score came with sub Alan Kennedy setting up Colin Moran with slide the ball past the Castlebar keeper Kealan Finnan.  A minute later Westports Mickey O Brian kicked Westport 4 points ahead 1-10 to 0-09 with 4 minutes left to Castlebars credit they never gave up and kicked two further points from Ryan Dunne and Ethan Gibbons. But the Westport defence stood tall to hold out and win by 2 points.  To joy ace scenes on the Westport sideline.
