Westport GAA AGM 2008

The AGM of Westport GAA took place on Tuesday last in the Wyatt Hotel at 8pm. Large attendees came to the meeting. In opening the meeting President Padraic Cunningham welcomed everyone he said that the coming year was going to be a tough one with the development of the Astroturf which is going to cost in the region of €500,000, and should be up and running in February. He stated that this project costs a lot of money and he asked people to “respect and enjoy it”, and urged more young people to get evolved with fundraising in the club.

Chairman Seamus Moran welcomed everyone the started by welcoming the ladies team and the camogie teams to the meeting for the first year. He paid tribute to the work being done at Bord Na nÓg level with every team competing in the Division 1 of the leagues, he also paid tribute to the 25 people that represented the club in Scor 2008 in Tourmackeady Westport was the best repeasented club in the West at the event. He thanked club Oifgeach Na Gaeilge Piaras O’Raghallaigh for his help with Scor. He also thanked people who helped with fundraising e.g. Lotto, Flag Day and Church Gate Collection, but he urged more people to help out with the lotto as figures were well down on the previous year.

Credit was also given to Ann Baynes and her committee for organising the club dinner dance with over 220 people attending. Also for the first time ever, the club will now be running a website. He thanked Anthony Walsh and Piaras O’Raghallaigh for their help. Also he thanked the main club sponsors the Castle Court Hotel the Wyatt Hotel and Austin O’Malley carpets.

Seamus’ wish for 2009 is that “all club members work as a team, get actively involved in the club and support the decisions the club make during the year”.

There was great credit given to the U-21 team who were defeated in the county final by Ballintubber, the lads just didn’t get out of the blocks on the day. But they still had a great year with wins over Charlestown, Ballinrobe, Crossmolina, Knockmore and Ballinrobe again in the semi- final . The management team was Michael Hearty, Padraic Barrett, Pat Conway and Pat Holmes.

Also congrats to the Junior B team that lifted the West title with a hard fought win over Burrishoole after a Replay the management team was Brendan McFadden and Pat Coughlin. To our county players, James Gill Senior, U-21 Dermot O Connor, Ryan Cafferky, Thady Gavin, Minor Kevin and Gary Keane and Lewis Cawley well done to all the lads for making the squads from the past year.

The positions of Intermediate, Junior and U-21 management have been referred to the football committee.
