Westport edge ding-dong battle

A SECOND-HALF goal from James Treacy proved the essential difference between the sides as Westport clinched the first half of an underage double at St Tiernan’s Park, Crossmolina on Saturday.
The corner forward netted from David Groden’s free, a score that put the Covies a point up, and they never relinquished the lead thereafter.
It was the culmination of a remarkable comeback for the West Mayo side, who overturned a six-point half-time deficit in a game marred by bad weather conditions.
Wind-assisted Belmullet led by 0-8 to 0-2 at the break. Points from Pádraig Ruddy (three), Michael Keane (three) and Brian Keane (two) had the North Mayo side in fine shape, but David Groden and Pat Lambert kept Westport within shouting distance.
The boys in blue dominated the third quarter, and points from Lambert, Luke Tunney, Declan Shanahan and David Groden closed the gap to two. Michael Keane exchanged points with Westport sub John Geraghty before Treacy struck for the decisive goal.
It was nip and tuck from there to the end. Lambert’s third point left Westport two ahead; Dara Ó Muirithe halved the deficit; Declan Shanahan added the ’Port’s final score, and a Michael Keane free was all Belmullet could manage in response. By the end, the sun was out, and Westport were happy too. The minor ‘B’ title followed on Sunday.
